  • What is Organic Peroxide

    Division 5.2 Organic peroxides, belong to the hazardous materials,like hydrogen peroxide etc.

    It is possible that organic compounds containing a divalent -0-0- structure, in which one or two hydrogen atoms have been replaced by organic groups, can be considered hydrogen peroxide. Organic peroxides are thermally unstable substances and may undergo exothermic self-accelerating decomposition.

    Additionally, they may have the following products or product attributes:

    • Easy to explode and split;
    • burns rapidly;
    • Sensitive to impact or friction;
    • Hazardous reactions with other substances;
    • Causes eye damage.

    Organic peroxides are a class of chemical compounds that contain the peroxide bond (-O-O-). These compounds play a crucial role in various industries, including polymerization, cross-linking, and as initiators in chemical reactions. Given their oxidative properties, organic peroxides require careful handling due to their potential to decompose explosively.

  • Types of Organic Peroxides

    Dicumyl Peroxide (DCP)

    Dicumyl peroxide, commonly known as DCP, is one of the most widely used organic peroxides. It is primarily employed as a cross-linking agent in the rubber industry and as a polymerization initiator in the production of various plastics. The price of dicumyl peroxide can vary depending on market demand and raw material costs.

    Diacyl Peroxides

    Diacyl peroxides, such as Dichlorobenzoyl Peroxide and Bis(2,4-dichlorobenzoyl) Peroxide, are known for their strong oxidizing properties. These compounds are often used in the synthesis of pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, and other organic compounds.

    Ketone Peroxides

    Ketone peroxides, including Acetyl Acetone Peroxide and Ethyl Methyl Ketone Peroxide (MEKP), are used as catalysts in the curing of resins, particularly in the aerospace and marine industries.

    Arylalkyl Peroxides

    Arylalkyl peroxides, such as Ditertiary Butyl Peroxide, are used as initiators in the polymerization of elastomers and thermoplastics.

TBPB can also be used as initiator for bulk and suspension polymerization or copolymerization of acrylate and methacrylate.

    Perodox LUNA - LPO CAS 105-74-8

    Perodox LUNA - LPO CAS 105-74-8

    LPO is a widely used initiator for the suspension and mass polymerization of vinyl chloride between 60°C and 80°C. In many cases LPO is combined with a more active initiator, such as a peroxydicarbonate to increase reactor efficiency. LPO is used as an initiator for the high pressure polymerization of ethylene, but because of its poor solubility in most aliphatics, it is in many cases replaced by other peroxides such as Di(3,5,5-trimethylhexanoyl) peroxide (TMHP). The advantage of LPO is the possibility of storing at ambient temperature. LPO is also used as an initiator for the polymerization of methylmethacrylate at 60-90°C. LPO is often applied as a replacement for 2,2'-Azobis(isobutyronitril) (AIBN).

    Perodox 14 - BIPB CAS 25155-25-3

    Perodox 14 - BIPB CAS 25155-25-3

    BIPB is a bifunctional peroxide which is used for the crosslinking of natural rubber and synthetic rubbers, as well as polyolefins. Rubber compounds containing BIPB have excellent scorch safety, and under certain conditions one step mixing is possible. Safe processing temperature: 135°C (rheometer ts2 > 20 min.). Typical crosslinking temperature: 175°C (rheometer t90 about 12 min.).

    Perodox 21 - TBPEH CAS 3006-82-4

    Perodox 21 - TBPEH CAS 3006-82-4

    TBPEH is an efficient initiator for the production of Low Density Polyethylene (LDPE). It is used both for tubular and autoclave processes. In most cases a combination with other peroxides is used to ensure a broad reactivity range. In suspension polymerization processes, TBPEH can be used for the polymerization of styrene at approximately 90°C. TBPEH has an activity comparable with Dibenzoyl peroxide (BPO75). Typically, TBPEH is used in combination with initiators such as tert-Butyl peroxybenzoate (TBPB) and tert-Butylperoxy 2 ethylhexyl carbonate (TBEC).

    Perodox M50 - MEKP CAS 1338-23-4

    Perodox M50 - MEKP CAS 1338-23-4

    Perodox K - CHP CAS 80-15-9

    Perodox K - CHP CAS 80-15-9

    For Polymer production andPoly(meth)acrylics: CHP may be used for various polymerization reactions. It can be used in emulsion, solution and bulk polymerizations. In emulsion processes, CHP may be activated by organic-soluble or water-soluble reducing agents, or by metal compounds to achieve polymerization at room temperature or lower.When no accelerators are used, effective polymerization can be obtained in the

    temperature range of 50-200°C. For example, styrene and methyl methacrylate can be polymerized in bulk in the temperature range of 60-100°C using CHP. CHP may also be used for emulsion polymerization of various vinyl monomers. In this case CHP may be used in combination with reducing agents to achieve

    reproducible results at low temperatures. For Thermoset: CHP may be used as an initiator for the room temperature cure of promoted unsaturated polyester and vinyl ester resins, and elevated temperature cure of non-promoted resins.

  • Purpose of Organic Peroxide

    Organic Peroxides are used for Cross link,Thermoplastics,Thermosets & Composites.etc.

  • Safety Handling

    1

    Thermal Stability

    Organic peroxides are thermally sensitive and can decompose when exposed to certain temperatures.Some must be stored under refrigerated conditions to preserve their usefulness and quality and for safety reasons.

    2

    Storage Conditions

    They should be stored in approved containers in well-ventilated areas,away from any sources of heat or flame and incompatible chemicals,and kept at or below the maximum recommended storage temperature for the product.

    3

    Compatibility

    Organic peroxides should not come into contact with materials that could cause contamination,as this can lead to rapid decomposition.Metals such as cobalt,iron,and copper can be particularly troublesome,so equipment handling organic peroxides should be made of materials like 316 stainless steel.

    4

    Oxidizing Properties

    While most organic peroxides are not strong oxidizers,peroxy acids do show strong oxidizing properties,and they are not compatible with organic peroxides.

    5

    Hazard Identification and Classification

    Different hazard classification systems exist for organic peroxide formulations,including transportation,storage,and handling.
